Department of Accounting

1. History

July 1, 1991：National Pingtung Institute of Commerce (Junior College-level) was established.

August 1, 1991：Department of Accounting was established. There were two-year and five-year programs in the junior college-level.

August 1, 1992：Two-year program of the Evening Division was established.

August 1, 1993：One more class of the two-year program was included.

August 1, 1998：National Pingtung Institute of Commerce was upgraded to College-level institute. This department became Department of Accounting in College-level.

August 1, 1999：Two-year program of the junior college was terminated.

August 1, 2000：One class of the four-year program in Evening Division was established; the two-year program of the junior college was terminated.

August 1, 2001：Four-year program was established and five-year program in the Evening Division was terminated.

August 1, 2013：There were two classes in the four-year program; the program in the Evening Division was terminated.

August 1, 2014：National Pingtung University was established (merged by National Institute of Commerce and National Pingtung University of Education).

Current Situation：There are six classes in the four-year program, and two classes in the Evening Division. 

2. Objectives

The program is devoted to cultivating in students both a specialized knowledge of “accounting”, “accounting and information technology”, and “core business” professional competencies required of high ranking accounting professionals who serve either in the business-industry sector or government agencies with responsibility mainly in analyzing and solving accounting-related problems.

3. Mission

Professionalism: To cultivate students with specialized competencies in “accounting”, “accounting and information technology ”, and “core business” personnel qualified for professional and general industries as well as government agencies.

Confidence: To promote students with management knowledge, and abilities of independent thinking and problem-solving.

Respect: To foster students with devotion to work, ethics and global views.

Pragmatism: To connect theory and practice to provide students with professional knowledge in local industries, and arrangement of practical training, site visits and speeches.

4. Features

A Balance between Theory and Practice: Speeches, site visits and practical training are arranged as well as the cooperative teaching with the invited professionals in the accounting field.

Specialized Faculty: Most of the faculty members obtain professional certificates of CPAs, CIAs, certified stock analysts, or are equipped with practical experience.

Guidance System: Students in the department vote for Excellent Teachers. The advisor system is practiced in the department.

Advancement of Professional Skills: To support students to acquire professional certificates, to promote language proficiency, and to enhance job ethics and attitude.

Local Characteristics: Offer courses in accompanying with characteristics of Pingtung industries to help students integrate local elements and utilize what have learned.

Professional Certificates: For those students who acquire Certified Public Bookkeepers may seek to obtain certificate of CPA after graduation or opportunities in the civil service. For those interested in pursuing advanced study, they may enter related graduate schools.

5. Course Design

Designed on a balanced match of theory and practice, the program emphasizes students’ acquisition of proficiency mainly in accounting practices, taxation laws, and applying computerized information. Speeches, practical training, and site visits are carefully scheduled and executed as an integral part of the balanced curriculum. Labs, classroom and conference rooms for instruction or specialized training purposes are properly furnished and equipped with advanced hardware and software to facilitate the teaching and learning processes.

6. Career Prospects

Graduates may seek employment in an accounting office or engage in accounting or other financial work in the private sector. The civil service offers good employment opportunities too. For those interested in pursuing graduate studies in Taiwan or a foreign country, a variety of fields can meet their needs, such as accounting, finance & banking, and business administration.
